I dare say that most of us have a fairly established and formed image of how we look. It's an image we carry within us constantly. When there’s no mirror around, it's like a favorite backpack or phone — always with us.
For some, it’s a clear set of physical characteristics: “I have wide hips, no waist, and a big nose, but my eyes are like a goddess’s.” For others, this image is more abstract but with specific details: “I’m pretty, except my heels didn’t turn out well,” or “Shoot me from the left side only, that’s my good side.” The combinations of pride and criticism about oneself are endless, like grains of sand on a beach.
But what if others see you completely differently? What if your image is drastically different from your internal perception? And what if your "big" nose is not an ancestral curse, but a unique feature that makes you incredibly charming, adding character and memorability to your profile?
In the age of selfies, portrait photographers don’t compete with colleagues and artists, but with your phone's selfie camera and your self-perception. We try to compete with filters polished to perfection, which often resemble armor, preventing a full view of reality through a narrow visor. These filters show only what is allowed by the internal beauty censor. This strict entity is often far from reality, thriving on external validation from likes and slaps from scales, warped mirrors, and the opinions of “other experts.”
Despite these slightly exaggerated pictures, we - photographers- can show you more than you see yourself. Something that might look completely different from an external perspective.
TO SEE A REFLECTION - A MIRROR IS ENOUGH. TO SEE A PERSON, YOU NEED ANOTHER PERSON
